All schools should be mobile phone-free environments by default
January 2026, the Department for Education (DfE) issued updated guidance recommending that all schools in England operate as “mobile phone-free environments” by default. This represents a notable change for school leaders, reinforcing the importance of behaviour, concentration, safeguarding, wellbeing, and learning outcomes.

What the updated guidance says
The Guidance sets a very clear expectation for headteachers and governing bodies in that:
• Mobile phones should be prohibited throughout the entire school day, not just during lessons
• Policies should apply during breaktimes, lunchtime and movement between lessons
• Any exceptions should be limited, clearly defined and justified
• Staff should lead by example and avoid using personal mobile phones in front of pupils during the school day
• Ofsted inspections will now consider how effectively the mobile phone policies are implemented and the impact they have on behaviour, safety and learning within the school
